Atomium Ring 7 - Spinel, Sapphires and Diamonds by Independent Jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs

Make a statement with the Atomium Ring 7, a true showstopper crafted by independent jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs, based in South Cambridgeshire. Inspired by the iconic Atomium structure in Belgium, this ring is sandcast in 9ct SMO (Single Mine Origin) gold using unique sand from Kennack Sands in Cornwall, giving each piece a one-of-a-kind texture.

Key Features:

  • Material. Sandcast in 9ct SMO gold, using sand from Kennack Sands in Cornwall, rich with serpentine for a distinctive, natural finish.
  • Central Stone. Features a AAA-cut Australian parti sapphire with deep, captivating colours.
  • Supporting Stones. Includes an additional parti sapphire, a blue spinel, and two Ocean Diamonds, creating a dynamic mix of hues.
  • Diamond Quality. Set with GH VS and GH SI diamonds, offering brilliance and contrast in two sizes.
  • Design Inspiration. The structure and fine tube settings reflect the Atomium in Belgium, with each tube showcasing a unique gemstone.
  • Size. Available in size M but can be adjusted slightly for a perfect fit.

The sandcast process, using sand full of rare serpentine from the Lizard in Cornwall, ensures each ring has a unique texture, as each mould is used only once. After casting, the ring is meticulously hand-finished, polished, and set with its array of gemstones.

Iain is an artisan fine jeweller creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. After a 20-year career in pharmaceuticals, ended by burnout, he began to make jewellery in 2020. Initially self taught, but now having diplomas in Fine and Advanced Jewellery, Iain's work reimagines iconic designs using sandcasting to create texture and gemstones to add colour. All pieces are made with recycled precious metals or SMO gold and all gemstones are ethically sourced.

Founder

Iain Sainsbury

Creating jewellery is my third career. During my PhD research I was commissioned into the Army Reserve and joined communications side of the Army, eventually commanding a Squadron before retiring in 2010.

Concurrently and after finishing my PhD in cell biology, I spent over 20 years in the global pharmaceutical industry. After burnout curtailed my career in 2018, I had a real desire to do something that had significantly less impact on the environment and more focus on creating something long-lasting.

My journey began by restoring vintage razors before moving into making jewellery with upcycled copper and wood. By 2020 I had taught myself to create more ambitious pieces. Since then, I have completed both the Fine and Advanced Jewellery Diplomas from the Jewellers Academy and have exhibited at Goldsmiths North. I live and work from my studio in rural South Cambridgeshire with my family and our two otterhounds, Tara and Willow

The jewellery industry needs to do more to reduce its carbon footprint. That’s why we offset 120x more carbon than we produce, plant a tree for every purchase, and promote jewellers that are leading by example.
